This is system software that actually enables you to use your computer. Its known as the Operating System or 'OS' for short. Operating Systems are those such as Windows Vista,- XP. Linux, etc

This is application software and provides you with the ability to type letters etc, construct and maintain databases etc etc. One of the most popular is Microsoft Office. This contains programmes such as Word (word processing software) and Excel (spreadsheet software often used for financial or statistical purposes)
