Having your own website, be it for yourself or the organisation you are part of, promotes, enhances and informs the outside world in a unique way It's called publicity! The internet was born as the 'information highway', not a term you here very much these days, but even so it remains true. Its like having a world library at your disposal. Also having a working and up to date website is an exciting and beneficial proposition.

Websites come in different sizes and layouts, rather like human beings! Some are more attractive, some more rounded than others! Think of websites again as being an open book which tells people about you or your club, society, charity or church. Its there to attract people to join in or join you!

So what's my next step in getting the website I need? Read on.....

So why have a website??
There's no doubt a website is a beneficial proposition to you and your organisation. First you need a home page. This is the first page visitors will arrive at when they have typed out the URL (website address) in their browser. It will consist of a banner or heading, some introductory text, and any amount of other information. Website developers call this the 'masthead' for fairly obvious reasons). Under this or down one or two sides of the page will be the navigation (links to other pages). These can also run across the top of the page under the banner. Think of the website as a book with chapters and sections. Each chapter contains information, relevant to the subject heading of that page. There also sub headings as there are on this page.

But I just don't want text on my pages

Pictures, Graphics and Animation.....
It would be rather boring if all website pages had text on it and nothing else. Its vital to have some variety, dependent upon what the subject matter is, Even academic books which tend to contain mostly text, have diagrams or pictures. It gives variety, enhances the look of the page. If it lacks this, they'll go elsewhere. The danger one has to be aware of is of adding too many graphics and images to a page. It could create overkill. Lots of images and animations are as bad as having just text! So its important web pages have balance of all these elements. The other important issue in creating a website, that the text can clearly seen on the background. As you can see, this website relies on a dark coloured background and mostly white text. To maintain clarity, our policy is light background/dark coloured text, or dark background light coloured text. This ensures readability and freshness.

Other features.....
You've just read what a basic website contains, and what to think about. There are of course other elements to a website which can enhance its usefulness. Features such as a Contact Form for people to get in touch with you with enquiries etc. (fairly vital really!), Search Box, etc etc. One thing we didn't mention earlier is that many websites have what is called a Flash intro page. It can be used to great effect and look very 'snazzy' (if you're into that sort of thing!). But its not a necessity and can at times be irritating as many flash animation take a while to load before taking you to the Home Page. But its your choice of course!

Your next step.....

What's all this going to cost me me?
